Pro Cheer Audition Photo Tips / by John Sherman

Pro dance & cheer photo advice from behind the lens-because details matter more than you think!

Alright—if you’re submitting dance or cheer audition photos, understand this:

these aren’t just pictures… they’re evaluations.

First—lighting matters more than anything.

You want clean, directional light that shows muscle tone and definition. Flat lighting will wash you out, and harsh shadows will distract from your lines. If they can’t light properly, your physique won’t translate on camera.

Second—your posture and lines need to be intentional.

Everything should look controlled—engaged core, clean arms, pointed toes. Sloppy lines read as lack of training immediately.

Third—expressions are part of the performance.

This isn’t a passport photo. You need confidence, approachability, and energy—without looking forced. Judges are looking for presence, not just technique.

Fourth—wardrobe matters—a lot.

Clean, fitted pieces that highlight your lines will elevate your entire image. Avoid anything distracting or ill-fitting. I strongly suggest Melly’s Dancewear—Mel is the absolute best in my opinion and understands exactly what works for auditions.

Fifth—keep everything else simple and polished.

Hair, makeup, and background should support the image, not compete with it.

Sixth—angles and lens choice matter.

Shooting too wide will distort your proportions. A proper focal length—like 85mm—keeps your body looking natural and balanced.

And finally—your photographer should know this industry.

If they’re not guiding your posing, fixing your lines, and adjusting lighting in real time—you’re not getting an audition-level image.

At the end of the day, these photos should show one thing:

that you’re already performing at the level they’re looking for.

If your photos don’t communicate that instantly… they’re not doing their job.
